Twenty six years I was serving as chief rescue officer and Chief Deputy of a Texas Sheriff’s Department. I responded to a plane crash call twenty five miles east of town where I was told that a pilot was joy riding and crashed in a sileage field. For those who do not know what sileage is, it is corn planted as close as possible raised ten feet tall, and used for cattle feed.

I entered the 640 acre field at 10:35 pm, searching for the plane. At 10:42 pm I heard moans, marked the time and began running in the direction of the moans. Seven minutes later I awoke on the ground, covered with what I thought was dew, but later found was parathion, azodrin 5 and ambush — two of the most deadly organosphospate toxins that existed at that time, and a respiratory toxin. I had no energy. I felt like I had been hit with a ton of bricks. I managed to rescue the victims, and then I lost motor function.

The poison control center informed the Sheriff that I would not be able to work for at least two years, if ever again, so he terminated my employment, cancelled my insurance, and did everything possible to force my family out of town. He even demanded that my wife’s employer fire her. Thank God her boss never took anything off anyone and refused the Sheriff’s request.

With no insurance, it was difficult to find help. Finally, I found a doctor who cared. He was Dr. William Rea of the Environmental Health Center. I remember the day that I first visited him. He called for the toxicology report on my blood work. The researcher asked Dr. Rea when I had died. He commented, “He’s not dead, he’s standing in front of me.” The researcher said I couldn’t be! I had enough organosphosphate pesticide in my bloodstream to kill six people. My doctor turned to me and said, “You’re not supposed to be here, so God must have something left for you to do. You should be dead.”
